But the operational side matters just as much. SOC teams are drowning in alert volume, and the hiring pipeline can't keep pace with expanding attack surfaces. Governed AI agents that triage, investigate, and collect evidence at machine speed are already changing the math for security operations.
The tension between these two realities defines the next 18 months. This piece breaks down both sides, the specific threat vectors SOC teams need to watch, and where security agents are already closing the gaps.
The defensive concern isn't theoretical anymore.
OWASP published a Top 10 for Agentic Applications, developed with more than 100 security researchers and practitioners. NIST launched an AI Agent Standards Initiative through its Center for AI Standards and Innovation, working alongside the NSF to advance research on AI agent security and identity. A Dark Reading reader poll found 48% of security professionals consider agentic AI the top attack vector heading into 2026.
That number tracks when you look at the adoption curve. Gartner projects 40% of enterprise applications will embed task-specific AI agents by end of year. SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, and ServiceNow already ship agentic capabilities. The footprint is growing faster than security controls can wrap around it.
What separates these agents from the chatbots and copilots that came before them is operational scope. Traditional AI tools analyze and recommend. Agents execute. They query production databases, modify source code, push data to external endpoints, and trigger actions across interconnected systems with limited human oversight. Each agent accumulates credentials, API keys, and service account tokens. Each one becomes a non-human identity with the kind of broad, persistent access that would concern any security team on sight.
Cisco's State of AI Security 2026 report put numbers to part of this: multi-turn attacks across extended conversations achieved success rates as high as 92% across eight open-weight models. Single-turn prompt injection defenses, the kind most vendors ship today, offered almost no protection during longer sessions involving memory retention and tool access. If your agent maintains context across interactions, and useful agents do, your single-turn guardrails are effectively decorative.
The recent OpenClaw episode made all of this concrete.
In under two weeks, the open-source agent framework attracted over 100,000 GitHub stars and hundreds of thousands of users. In that same window, Koi Security audited 2,857 skills on OpenClaw's community marketplace and found 341 that were actively malicious, the majority deploying Atomic Stealer to harvest credentials, browser passwords, and cryptocurrency wallets. A separate disclosure revealed a one-click remote code execution vulnerability rated 8.8 on CVSS. The codebase stored API keys and passwords in cleartext.
Palo Alto Networks framed the core architectural problem: access to private data, exposure to untrusted content, and the ability to take external action. Each element is manageable alone. Combined in an autonomous agent running locally with full machine access, they create something that can be weaponized through its inputs and has the privileges to bypass DLP, proxy, and endpoint monitoring entirely.
Every agentic threat traces back to the same architectural reality: agents need broad access to be useful, but broad access is exactly what makes them dangerous.
You can't build an effective security operations agent that only sees half your environment. You can't run autonomous compliance evidence collection against a subset of your logs. You can't detect lateral movement when the agent investigating the alert has no visibility into the network segments where the attacker pivoted. You can't perform meaningful alert correlation when an agent can query endpoint data but not DNS logs, or cloud audit trails but not firewall events.
Every permission you grant expands the blast radius if that agent gets compromised. Every API key it holds becomes a target. Every data source it can query becomes a potential exfiltration channel. And unlike a compromised human account, a compromised agent operates at machine speed, continuously, across every system it has credentials for.
Lock agents down and they become expensive chatbots that can't do the work you deployed them for. Open them up and you've created the kind of over-permissioned non-human identity that attackers will actively hunt. The answer isn't choosing one side. It's solving the visibility problem in a way that doesn't require dangerous tradeoffs.
The defensive conversation dominates security media, but the operational problem is what keeps SOC managers up at night. Most SOC teams process thousands of alerts daily. The majority go uninvestigated. Not because analysts aren't working, but because investigating a single alert properly can take 30 to 45 minutes when you're pivoting across four tools, enriching IOCs manually, and documenting findings in a ticketing system that wasn't designed for the workflow.
Attack surfaces expand faster than teams can hire, and the hiring problem compounds everything. Finding, vetting, and onboarding experienced security analysts takes months even when budget exists. Daniel Miessler put it directly: CISOs are realizing there's no way to scale human teams to match how constant, continuous, and increasingly effective attackers are becoming. The friction of hiring is brutal compared to deploying agents that can start doing verifiable work immediately.
This isn't about replacing analysts. It's about the work that buries analysts because there's too much of it and not enough of them.
Alert triage. Phishing detection. Threat intel enrichment. Compliance evidence collection. Detection engineering. Investigation handoffs. These are the workflows where agentic AI changes the math. Not because the technology is smarter than a senior analyst, but because it operates at machine speed around the clock.
The key distinction from the ungoverned agents creating the defensive headaches: security-focused agentic AI is built with governance from the ground up. Deterministic guardrails constrain what the agent can do. Full audit trails record every action and decision path. Human-in-the-loop gates protect high-impact decisions. The agent can triage 200 alerts autonomously, but containment actions still require a human to approve.
The defensive threat and the operational bottleneck look like separate problems. They share a root cause: visibility.
On the threat side, ungoverned agents operating in shadow AI environments don't show up in your asset inventory. Their activity looks like normal user behavior, because from your SIEM's perspective, an OpenClaw instance sending emails on behalf of an employee is indistinguishable from the employee sending emails. Detecting compromise requires correlating signals across every log source simultaneously, because agent behavior spans endpoints, applications, cloud services, and network segments in a single action chain.
On the operations side, security agents can only investigate what they can see. IDC data indicates the average enterprise monitors roughly two-thirds of its environment. The remaining third sits in cold storage, dropped at ingestion because of cost constraints, or scattered across observability and DevOps tools that don't feed your security stack. A security agent that can't access DNS query logs because your SIEM's per-GB pricing made that data source uneconomical is a faster analyst that's still partially blind. And a partially blind agent confidently closing alerts it shouldn't is worse than no agent at all.
The industry has been trying to solve these problems separately. Defensive frameworks focus on governance, identity controls, and zero-trust principles. Operational platforms focus on agent capabilities and automation. Both are necessary. Neither is sufficient without complete data underneath.
The frameworks are coming. OWASP, NIST, and the broader security community are building the standards that will mature agentic security practices. But SOC teams can't wait for perfect frameworks to address problems that are already operational.
